This Vanilla Brown Sugar Body Scrub is a great way to give yourself or someone else an indulgent spa treatment from the comfort of your own shower. It smells good enough to eat and is an easy DIY version of Bath & Body Works Warm Vanilla Sugar Scrub.

This is made from simple and inexpensive ingredients so its a thrifty gift for yourself or a friend. For the same price as one jar at Bath & Body Works, you can make several at home. Find cute jars at the craft store or just grab a Mason Jar.  Homemade scrubs make a wonderful teacher gift, secret Santa gift, or gift exchange idea.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup granulated white sugar
  • ½ cup coconut oil
  • 1 Tbsp. vanilla extract
  • 2 vitamin E capsules (like these)

Directions:

1. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl thoroughly until they are all well combined.

2. To add vitamin E capsule, poke the end with a pin and squeeze the oil inside into other ingredients, discard capsule.

3. Store scrub in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

To Use:

Apply a palmful or more to arms, legs, shoulders, and chest, rub in a circular motion, rinse off. Moisturize as usual.

These ingredients are loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, flavinoids,  natural exfoliants, and aromatherapy to give you skin a boost and scrub off what life leaves behind.  Use 1-2 times a week for soft glowing skin.

Hello I was wondering if I could use the Vitamin E oil that i have in a bottle.. does it matter if it’s the capsules?

    Hi,
I was wondering how much this yields?

I can usually fill two 4oz mason jars with it. Depending on how much oil you add it makes around 1 cup of scrub. The oil makes it a little denser so you can pack it in a little better.

I am following the recipe and am not getting 2 mason jars? Are you packing the brown sugar pretty heavy? Also how should the consistency be when finished?

Sorry, I should have clarified. I was using the small 4oz jars like in the picture. Sometimes I have a little extra for a third jar if I’m not making it as oily. If you are getting more, then you are probably making it dryer. You could just fill more jars or consider adding more oil to make it more dense and take up less space.

It seems a little dry. Do I need to add more vitamin E? Also I’ve added vanilla a little more than required but the scrub doesn’t really have a good smell. Anything I can do to make it smell better?

    Thanks!

Are you just observing that it’s dry? Or have you actually used it and still feel it’s too dry? Since coconut oil it in a solid state at cooler temps it may not seem as wet as it really is since the oil will melt while you are in the shower. I would encourage you to use it first before you add more oil because it might get too greasy. It you have tried it and you feel it’s still too dry, you can add more coconut oil until you get to a more desirable ratio. As for the scent. If it’s not strong enough for you, you can try to use a vanilla essential oil. This is more potent than Vanilla extract. Other ideas to help scent it: Orange Extract or Orange essential oil for a Vanilla/Orange blend; Lavender Essential Oil for a Lavender/Vanilla blend: or Cinnamon Extract, Ground Cinnamon or Cinnamon essential oil for a Cinnamon/Vanilla blend. Hope that helps!

Which coconut oil did you use? If it is one that has a stronger coconut smell, that will change the fragrance when it’s mixed with the vanilla. Spectrum’s Organic (NOT VIRGIN) has no smell to it, so it will pick up the full smell of your vanilla.

Is there a cute little label that I can use to attach to my jars that I’m handing out for presents? Also, I could only find 8oz Mason Jars, so would you suggest doubling the recipe to fill the jars? Thank you!

Hmmm, I’ve never made bath cube before. It’s pretty crumbly and not sticky so I’m not sure how you would get it to bond together to make cubes. You could try adding honey but honestly I have no idea if it will work.

Never used cocunut oil before. Is it a liquid or a cream? Any suggestions on where to buy it?

You can get coconut oil just about anywhere these days. My regular grocery store sell it. You can find fractioned coconut oil in the health food section. That is a liquid. Or you can find it int the baking aisle. This is a solid at lower temps and a liquid at higher temps. This is what I usually buy because I’m too lazy to go to the health store for the fractioned kind!

My skin’s really dry and feel like I should exfoliate regularly. I used to buy scrubs but now I felt like they are so overpriced so recently I’ve been starting to make my own. This is one of the best recipe I’ve seen so far and I’ll try this for sure! I feel like coconut oil works better than olive oil. Olive oil tends to make the consistency more liquidy and they wont last for long until the mixture becomes all greasy.

Nope! It’s not necessary to use the Vitamin E. It just helps it be more moisturizing.

Sure! If you have super sensitive skin it might be too rough of an exfoliation for you so just use a little bit at first and rub gently with your fingers until you know how your skin will take it.

I’m wondering if you can add Castile soap to this to make it an exfoliating body wash scrub. Thoughts?

Sure I don’t know why not. MY lavender bubbling bath salts has body wash in it so it’s similar in principle. Come back and let us know how it turns out!

I would do 2 batches of 6 and make sure to buy fractionated coconut oil or other liquid oil like Almond oil. I would also use a little less oil so you don’t have any excess. It will be easier to divide that way. Then once you get it into the jars, top it off with a little more oil. Maybe 1 Tablespoon per jar, give or take depending on how liquidy you want the scrub. HTH!

    Hi
I get a reaction to coconut products – coconut oil, coconut water, etc… Is there another oil I can use? Due to its solidifying and melting value the only other one I could think of was the Orange Palm oil. What are your thoughts on that or any other alternative. Also variety, how would coffee grounds and perhaps cinnemon be as a 2nd batch of jars (instead of Vanilla and white sugar)
