I’m back for another month of Shellie Unplugged! Each month I take a little time to let you get to know me better, get a glimpse of the girl behind the blog! This month I’m sharing highs and lows from the month. Why highs and lows? Because I’m just like you. Our everyday has good and bad. It’s definitely not all sunshine and roses around here!
So here we go…Here are my highs and lows from August
My older son turned five this month. We really went all out for his birthday this year. It was the first one he’s been really, eagerly anticipating. He counted down the days. His birthday was on a Saturday this year so we got to really live it up. We went out for pancakes in the morning. Then we had all our extended family over for a party. Jack got to play with all his cousins and he had the best time. Then the following weekend, we took him and one of his little friends to the Monster Jam Rally. They had so much fun.
My own birthday is two days after my son’s. We celebrated a day early and went to my parents for lunch. My brother and his family were in town. We had a great day. Then later that week, my parents took us to Schlitterbahn to celebrate our birthdays. My youngest son – and resident dare devil – says Schlitterbahn is the best place on earth. They don’t have height requirements so no one ever tells him he’s too little. We spent the day riding rides and having a fabulous time.
High: Star Wars
I’ve been introducing my kids to the Star Wars movies and it’s been so much fun to watch the movies with them. I haven’t watched them since I was a kid. There are so many things I forgot, like those cute little ewoks and how crazy Princess Leia’s hair really was. And my-oh-my how special effects have changed in 35 years! Plus the kids are getting so into it. James wants to be Darth Vader now for Halloween and I think Jack will be a Storm Trooper. I asked if he wanted to be Luke Skywalker. His response: “Mom! Did you know that Darth Vader is Luke’s DAD!? I can NOT be James’s Dad. I am his brother.” Complete with the newly acquired 5-year-old attitude. 🙂
Low: Back to School
It’s official. Summer vacation is over. My boys started school on Monday and while I’m happy to be back to a regular routine and be able to get things done, I am so sad that another summer is over. We had so much fun but we didn’t do nearly as much as I would have liked. My older one started Kindergarten this year too which has been tough. The house was so quiet without him. James asks constantly, “What is Jack doing right now?” He misses him terribly. I’m also reminded how little time we have with these precious little ones. I have 13 summers left until Jack is gone and much fewer that he’ll actually want to hang out with me!
A Few of My Favorite Things This Month:
- Books – This month I was a little slower with reading, definitely not like last month when I read three fabulous books in a row! This month, I finally read Wild. It wasn’t amazing but I enjoyed reading it. I read Orange in the New Black which was captivating and totally fascinating. Then I read Worthy which was decent but not my favorite of hers.
- Blue Bell Ice Cream – My fellow Texans can attest that it has been a looooong summer without Blue Bell. I was absolutely floored the other day when I was at HEB and saw a sign saying it would be back on shelves on August 31. I actually heard that news a few weeks ago but I wasn’t sure if our small town store would make the cut for the first delivery wave. I was so excited to see that sign! The boys cheered and there were a number of people in the frozen aisle taking pictures of the sign.
- Orange is the New Black – Last month I told you I binge watched Parenthood and was looking for a new show. Well, I went to the complete opposite end of the spectrum and watched all three seasons of Orange is the New Black. First, I read the book. I really enjoyed that. The show? Wow! It’s a lot different from the book and very graphic at times but I have been enjoying it too. I just finished the Season 3 Finale last night and I cannot believe I will have to wait nearly a year before it starts back. AHHH!
