Yay! I have a new monthly feature here on Simply Shellie that I think you are going to love! Many of you have been reading my blog for years and have gotten little glimpses into our lives. But I have lots of new readers since launching Simply Shellie. I wanted to take the time to introduce myself and let you get to know me better!
So each month I’m going to do a Shellie Unplugged to let you get a glimpse of the girl behind the blog! This month I’m sharing highs and lows from the month. Why highs and lows? Because I’m just like you. Our everyday has good and bad. It’s definitely not all sunshine and roses around here!
So here we go…Here are my 5 highs and a low
High: Fourth of July
Fourth of July sneaks on me every year and every year in the moment I realize that it’s one of my favorite holidays. My husband works long hours and occasionally has to bring work home. Having a full 3-day weekend with him is such a treat. We usually spend the weekend with family and friends. It’s lazy. It’s full of food. It’s FUN! This year we were in my parents’ neighborhood parade. We went to my father-in-law’s block party. We went swimming, watched fireworks and even set off some of our own.
We also went with some friends to a rodeo in the small town next to ours. My kids did Mutton Bustin’ for the very first time and it was seriously the most fun. I have probably watched their Mutton Bustin’ video about a dozen times. If you aren’t familiar with mutton bustin’, they basically strap a vest and a helmet onto a kid and stick him on a sheep. The sheep bolts out of the pen and whoever holds on the longest and has the best score is the winner. Neither of mine were the winner but they had so much fun. You can watch my older son Jack’s video on Instagram.
High: Nordstrom Anniversary Sale
I love the Nordstrom Anniversary sale. I stay up entirely too late at night surfing their website and looking for things to buy. I don’t go shopping very often so my husband usually doesn’t complain too much when he sees the large charge from Nordstrom come across our card. I found so many great things this year! I did several posts over on SavingWithShellie where I shared some of my favorite finds. You can check those out here and here.
But the sale is still going! And just the other day I discovered these darling Turkish towels. You can get them with a letter on them or plain. I am grabbing a couple because I think they will make great hostess gifts or teacher and friend gifts over the holidays. They haven’t come in the mail yet but I’m thinking you could use them as a throw, wrap or a towel. We shall see! They come in 5 different colors. Go see them for yourself!
High: New York City
Throughout the year I attend conferences to learn more about what’s new in blogging. This year my two conferences were back-to-back in New York City. I got to escape the Texas heat for a few days and join some of my girlfriends in the city. It couldn’t have come at a better time. My kids and I are getting weary of unscheduled days and constant togetherness. It was so refreshing to have some me-time and let the kids have a break from me. I came back refreshed and with so much more patience. I might actually be able to make it until school starts now without losing my cool!
Anyway, while in the city we stayed at a fabulous new hotel: The Residence Inn at the World Trade Center. More on that later but if you are headed to NYC in the near future I can’t recommend it enough. We had lunch at lovely cafes, got to see the Blue Man Group and even a short set from BoyzIIMen. The weather was gorgeous and I loved every minute. Plus I came home reinvigorated about blogging and got lots of new ideas for the site!
Low: Help me! I’m Stuck!
Like I said, I’m sharing lows because bad things happen to good people. LOL. So my big low was that I got stuck in an escalator. Now you know it’s not an urban myth and it really does happen! Maxi dress lovers beware! I was stepping off the escalator in a hotel in New York City and the back of my dress got caught in the escalator. We had to push the big red emergency button. My friends had to go run for help. I just stood there trapped. People would walk by, gasp and stare.
The hotel was great through the whole ordeal. They tried several different things to try to get me out and finally they unscrewed the top plate and I was able to get my dress out. But it’s ruined. My cute Lilly for Target dress is ruined. Covered in black grease stains and filled with holes. The cute Lilly dress that I stayed up half the night trying to get and then finally braved the black friday-like crowds in the wee hours one morning at Target. Sigh. It’s soaking in it’s third blue Dawn bath right now. It might still be salvagable but I don’t have high hopes. So that’s my low. Pretty silly. #firstworldproblems for sure. But consider it a PSA for maxi dress wearers everywhere!
A Few of My Favorite Things This Month:
- I just finished reading 3 great books in a row: All The Light We Cannot See, What She Left Behind and At The Water’s Edge. If you are looking for a good read, check out one of those.
- LaCroix Curate – I’ve been working on cutting back my Diet Coke consumption and I am obsessed with Cherry Lime LaCroix Curate. Other flavors of LaCroix are so-so but this one? LOVE! I grab mine at HEB or Target.
- Parenthood – For some crazy reason I never watched this show when it was on TV. But I binged watched with the hubs this month. How in the world did I miss this!? It was such a good show! If you haven’t watched it, do yourself a favor and start this weekend. And now I’m mourning my life without the Bravermans. Someone please recommend a new show for me!
That’s it for the first edition of Shellie Unplugged! What highs and lows did you have this month? Any favorite things I need to check out?
