Happy New Year! I slacked off a little with the Shellie Unplugged posts over the Fall. Our life was absolutely crazy with family obligations, Fall sports, holidays and everything else. But I’m determined to bring these back as a regular monthly feature.
The beginning of a new year is always a bittersweet time for me. I look forward to all the fun and new experiences to be had with the dawning of a new year. 2016 will be a big year for us in many ways. We will be moving again (staying in the same area), a number of my friends are having babies all around the same time, my oldest will start Kindergarten in the Fall and we have several fun trips and activities planned for this year.
But it’s bittersweet too. Another year gone. Full of sweet memories and snuggles with little ones. Holidays spent with aging loved ones, fun times with new friends and reconnecting with old ones. But also the ever-present reminder that time is the most valuable commodity and another year gone is just one more we can’t have again.
So in that mindset, my New Year’s Resolution is to be nicer to myself. I know like many other moms I put myself last. I eat what’s left after everyone else has fixed their plate. I sleep when everyone else has gone to bed and all the chores are done. I only buy things for myself once all the needs of everyone else have been met. There’s really no reason for that really – I guess it’s just intrinsic. But I’m going to change that this year!
For 2016 I have a nice little list of things I’m going to do for myself. Things I’ve been putting off, some things I just need to do and others that I’ve been wanting to do but never took the steps to make them possible. I’m sure I won’t get to everything on my list but I’ll (hopefully) check in with you every month and let you know what action item I did that month. Hopefully it will inspire you to put yourself first, at least every once in a while.
What I’m Reading: I just started reading The Paris Architect by Charles Belfoure This is one of the titles that was a steal of a deal over Black Friday weekend. I have really been enjoying it so far and am having trouble putting it down!
What I’m Watching: I literally just finished binging The Paradise. It was my guilty pleasure in between football bowl games while I was down for the count with this cold/sinus infection misery. It’s not the same quality as Call The Midwife or Downton Abbey but it’s British and fun and I enjoyed it.
What I’m Loving: The new Serial Podcast. While I don’t find this season as intriguing or as engaging as last season, I am enjoying it. I also find that listening to a podcast makes me so much more efficient at housework! I keep working and moving the entire time the podcast is running without getting sidetracked. I’m always amazed at how much I’ve accomplished while I listened. Episode 4 should drop this week so it’s not too late to get started.
What are your plans for the New Year? What are you loving right now? Any favorite things I need to check out? You can also check out previous editions of Shellie Unplugged here.
