Homemade Nesquik

This post may contain affiliate links. Read my disclosure policy.

Homemade Nesquik couldn’t be easier. Just 3 simple ingredients. Whip up a batch to use for chocolate milk, Cafe Mocha, chocolate cool whip and more!

Sometimes getting your kids to drink milk is tough! With this simple 3 ingredient Homemade Nesquik they’ll be asking for more! Plus, unlike the store bought kind you know exactly what’s in it. You can use ordinary cocoa powder like Hershey’s but if you really want to kick it up a notch and make it decadent, use Scharffen Berger. Mmmm.

While it’s great in milk, try a tablespoon in your coffee for a Café Mocha twist. You can also make chocolate whipped cream by adding 3 tablespoons for every 1 cup of whipping cream. I also have made this Nesquik chocolate frosting in the past and it’s easy and yum!

I was extremely excited to find this recipe as we go through A TON of nesquik. Unfortunately, to me, this tastes like nothing but cocoa powder. I tried to add a little more sugar to sweeten it up some, but it didn’t help any. Also, it would not mix with the milk and just sat in clumps on top of it. Too bad, because I was really hopeful.

add a bit of warm water to your glass first — just a few tablespoons. The mix will blend well with the hot water then add your cold milk.

When I saw this recipe, it looked good, but I knew from experience that neither cocoa nor sugar will dissolve well in cold milk (liquid). Mixing it like this will be more convenient, but what we do is to put the quantity of cocoa and sugar desired into the bottom of the glass, add a couple of tablespoons (or so) of water (or milk), and microwave a few seconds until it’s dissolved, stirring. Then add cold milk, and it works great!
I also wonder if this would possibly work if the sugar were to be be put in the blender to make it superfine, therefore making it easier to dissolve. I’ll try that in a small quantity.
      Good Luck!! :o)

I made this today with my daycare children. Yes, I agree it doesn’t mix that great in cold milk. We did use it in smoothies and it worked out fabulously blended. I’ve also read reviews elsewhere that state to add a couple tablespoons of warm water to your glass, mix with the chocolate mix and it mixes very easily then add your cold milk to the glass and you will have a perfect glass of chocolate milk. I love that we know exactly what ingredients are in the mix. I’m thinking of even trying it with coconut sugar next time to make it healthier. Thank you for the recipe!

Jen, my 14 year old son makes this constantly. The trick is to melt the mixture first by adding your hottest tap water, just a few tablespoons, maybe 1/3 or 1/4 cup. Just eyeball it. Swish it around then add your milk! HUGE money saver!

Good idea. You can also just lightly warm up a small amount of milk in a pan and dissolve the cocoa and sugar and then pour it in a glass and fill it up with cold milk.

And what makes me really excited about this is that you can use fair trade cocoa and have chocolate milk without contributing to slavery! I like that! Thanks for this. Kelly

Love this – no mystery ingredients like you find in packaged goods. Definitely trying this with iced coffee – what a good idea! Thanks.

I love using the sugar free Nesquik in my coffee….the recipe for that would be just Cocoa powder and salt? Just wondering b/c even the sugar free Nesquik has a bit of sweetness to it. Thanks!

The reason sugar free nesquik is still sweet is because it has a sugar substitute. So you couldn’t just use cocoa powder and salt. You would have to use a sugar substitute as well for the Nesquik.

The general recipe for homemade chocolate is 2:1 sugar:cocoa cups.1-2 tbl of this mix into 12 oz milk. If a teaspoon of stevia equals a cup of sugar, How much of this mix do you use to add to 12 oz milk?

Except kids don’t need milk, OR this much sugar to get them to drink the milk they really don’tneed. The calcium in dark greens is way more usable. And anything but whole milk has added sugar ALREADY they do not have to list as an ingredient. And if you look at what’s in non-organic milk, giving them skim or low-fat “regular” milk, you are doing far more damage than good. Food for thought.

I’m sorry but Nesquick flavor goes far beyond simply cocoa and sugar.. it has spices (at least vanilla) so this is disappointing.

Its more of an instant chocolate milk than a specific brand milk flavouring but for what it is it tastes amazing

I prefer using powdered sugar instead of the granulated, and while I have not tried the hot water method to mix, if you have a stick blender, it works like a charm.

Tried this today and it’s yummy! I sifted my ingredients and then put a little hot water in the bottom of my glass with the mix before adding the cold milk. Worked perfectly. No lumps. This is not as sweet as nesquick and tastes more like “chocolate”. Winner at my house.

Tried it and liked it. A bit sweet though but I’m just going to lessen the sugar next time. The mix with cold milk did not do well but a minute in the microwave was all it needed to make my hot choco. Overall, I think it’s great that I learned how to do it at home using ingredients I already have in my cupboard. Thanks!

I’ve never tried it myself but since Splenda is advertised as being a sugar substitute in baking, you shouldn’t have any problem. If it doesn’t work or has too much of a Splenda taste, try doing 1/2 Splenda and 1/2 Sugar and see if that helps.

Well you’d need something to make it liquid. So if you are using powdered milk, you’d need to add water.

I just made this because, what can I say, mama had a sweet tooth. It turned out great, didn’t even have to do warm water with it. I blended it up with my frother!!!!! COMPLETELY hit the spot!!!

Quick edit before I post. It won’t let me rate it 5 Stars!!!!
