Peppermint Bath Salts are a great way to unwind after a long day of Christmas shopping, wrapping, baking, winter cleaning, or whatever else life has thrown your way. Aromatherapy is definitely therapeutic and very relaxing. Peppermint is a stimulating scent and is known to help reduce headaches, and would be a great natural help for cold and flu symptoms also.
These bath salts lack a lot of the chemicals and preservatives that you would find in a jar from the store. You could buy these at the local bath and body store and pay $10-$15 a jar but making them at home drops your cost to about $1.00 for the same amount or more. Make several batches and use them for teacher gifts, Secret Santa surprises, hostess gifts- don’t forget your mail carrier, dog groomer, and hair dresser this Christmas! Be a little selfish and make one for yourself too while you’re at it.
You will need:
- 1 ½ cups epsom salts
- ½ cup sea salt
- peppermint essential oil
- red food coloring
Directions:
- Combine salt, epsom salts, and peppermint essential oil-to your desired scent strength, in a bowl. If you wish to add color to create the look of peppermint-remove half the Epsom salt mixture from the bowl and set aside.
- Add a few drops of red food coloring to the remaining half and stir- continue adding until you reach your desired color.
- Layer white and red Epsom salt mixture into jar. Alternating colors until full.
To use:
- Scoop ½ cup of Peppermint Bath salts into hot bathtub.
I picked this particular jar up at Hobby Lobby when it was 50% off and I think it was about $1.50. You can also find suitable containers at Dollar Tree, Wal-Mart, Ikea, and Micheals. These would be pretty in a mason jar as well. Don’t forget a ribbon and handmade tag for the recipient.

How much peppermint essential oil did you use, Shellie?
I think just a couple drops. It’s more of a preference thing depending how minty you want it.
Does the red food coloring ever get on the person’s skin???
I haven’t had that experience Lynn. But I do’t use very much. If you wanted it a deep red then you might have trouble.
