Budget Laundry Room Makeover

Over the summer our family moved into a new neighborhood to be closer to school and friends since my oldest is starting Kindergarten. We love our new area but there are definitely downsides to moving into an older home: Projects!

The first home project on our list was the laundry room. In our past two homes I’ve had a large laundry room with natural light, a sink, plenty of cabinets and counter space. The laundry room in this house has no counter space, no cabinets, no sink and no natural light. Yikes! So priority #1 for me was to refresh the laundry room.

We set a budget for our laundry room makeover and the main goal was to build some cabinets over the washer/dryer to replace the open shelf. We also had a bench built with cubbies for shoes and things. These new pieces look fantastic and but they ate up the bulk of our budget.

We had a little bit of leftover money and I really wanted to add some extras to the room – make it look bright and cheery since there is no natural light. Since we were on a tight budget I decided to try shopping at At Home, The Home Décor Superstore. There is a store near me and friends keep telling me about all the great things they’ve found shopping at At Home. I thought it might be a great option for me too.

And boy-oh-boy was I thrilled! At Home stores are massive! Thankfully I went shopping without my kids because I spent ages walking up and down the aisles checking out all the affordable designer style. I filled my cart to overflowing with so many great things for our laundry room. I was so pleased with how it turned out! Here are some of the fabulous things I found.

flowerpictures

First I found these pretty floral framed canvas  pieces. I have a bright red washer/dryer so I was glad to find something that tied in with those while still keeping the room bright and fresh. The only thing I regret about these floral pictures is that I didn’t buy four of them! Once I hung them I realized how much better they would look in a big square grouping. And of course when I went back they were gone! So lesson learned, if you see something you love, grab it! I saved $50 of our budget and I will check two more stores when we take a trip to Houston in a few weeks. I’m determined to find them, but it might be tough since At Home stores get more than 500 new items every week!

I found a few other pieces in the art department I really liked. The vintage laundry sign is fresh and fun. Plus, it pulls double duty. The hooks on the bottom will be great to hang drip dries. The other piece is this “Do Small Things with Great Love” piece. I saw this message and thought it was perfect for laundry.

Laundry is one of those mundane tasks we do day in and day out. It’s a chore that rarely gets acknowledged. But that sign makes me smile and reminds me to do this job with love and care instead of with discontent and complaint.

woofsign

Two of my best finds were actually from the clearance section. I found this darling WOOF! sign in the art and decor clearance. It looks so fun above the dogs’ bowls. I also found a dog treat canister in the housewares clearance. I loved the top of it but I really didn’t like the bottom. At Home has such a huge selection of housewares so I decided to make a trip over to the kitchenware aisle. I found a plain white utensil pot and the dog canister lid fit on it perfectly! I love that At Home’s pieces are so affordable you can mix and match them to get your own look.

And look at this pretty woven basket tray with metal handles I found! I love the way the metal handles give the tray a rustic look. I put the treat canister in it as well as a plant and candle. This really helps brighten up the room and breaks up the red of the washer/dryer.

I also stacked some fresh new towels on top of the washer. At Home has a wide selection of towels and other linens. I grabbed a set of new towels to put in our guest bedroom. They are so soft and plush and I love the crisp white color. I also found some over-the-rod towel hooks in the organizing department that will be great for my drip dries. I can use them for scarves, undergarments, swim suits and anything else that needs to be hung. Perfect and just $2.99!

arearug

I was especially impressed with the rug department at At Home. There were so many rugs in different styles and colors I really had a hard time choosing. I found this jute rug with a pattern to it. Since our space is so small, I wanted a neutral rug that wouldn’t make the room seem smaller but I wanted something unique, not too plain. This rug helps freshen up the space without being overwhelming. I grabbed a basic rug pad as well to keep it in place. My 3×5 pad was only $4.99. Affordable and it works perfectly!

I was thrilled with our laundry room makeover. While I still have no counter space and no natural light, At Home, The Home Décor Superstore helped me make my space bright and fresh. It almost looks like a magazine. It’s one of my favorite rooms in the house! And let’s be honest. That has to change. No one should love their laundry room that much, right? I think I need to refresh my dining room next. I drooled over all the gorgeous dining chairs I saw at At Home. Time to go back and grab some!
