5 Simple Steps for a Healthier Life is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of John Hancock.
A couple weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend the John Hancock Hosts the Cooking Light & Health Fit Foodie Race Weekend event here in Austin. I haven’t done a 5K race in a while and I had forgotten how fun they are! This event was especially great because it featured tons of healthy food companies and debuted new products and tools aimed at living a healthy lifestyle.
As host of the 2016 race series, John Hancock is sponsoring the John Hancock Vitality Village, the ultimate post-race experience that rewards a job well done and celebrates participants’ hard work through delicious and healthy experiences. We met racing legends, saw cooking demonstrations and ate tons of yummy food. At the three-day John Hancock Hosts The Cooking Light & Health Fit Foodie Race Weekend, calories are both burned and earned!
I really enjoyed this weekend because it was a great visual of simple steps you can take to lead a healthier lifestyle. I’m the first to admit that my lifestyle is far from healthy. I don’t get enough sleep. We don’t eat as healthy as we should and I could definitely be more active. So today I wanted to share 5 Simple Tips to a Healthier Lifestyle. It’s more of an accountability post for me but hopefully you will find these tips useful too!
1| Get a Fitness Tracker
Fitness Trackers are an awesome way to keep track of your activity and set goals for yourself. We love our Fitbit Charge and the flexibility it provides to set goals depending on your activity level. Even small goals initially can lead to a healthier lifestyle. But remember, fitness without good nutrition is not nearly as impactful on your health as when you combine the two.
2| Cook At Home
Eating out is fun but isn’t always the best choice for a healthy lifestyle. The portions are often too big and the ingredients unhealthy. You’re also more willing to overindulge since eating out is considered a treat. Try making dinner a few nights a week at home. Incorporate leans meats and vegetables into your meal plan. We love the healthy recipes found on SkinnyTaste.
3| Motivate Yourself
Most people are more successful when motivated. Give yourself some incentive to get active and eat healthy. Here are just a few ideas for ways you can get motivated to be healthier
- Buy a favorite cooking magazine if you make healthy eating choices 7 days in a row.
- Call your friends and have a contest to see who can walk the most steps in a 2 week period.
- Visit JHRewardsLife.com for more information on how you can be rewarded for the small steps you take towards a healthier life, like exercising, seeing the doctor and purchasing healthy foods at the grocery store – and all through your life insurance policy.
The possibilities for motivation are endless. Brainstorm something that will motivate you and put a plan in place!
Getting enough sleep makes you feel better. But even more than improving you mood, adequate sleep can benefit your heart, mind and body. Your body needs to to rejuvenate for the next day. You brain also works hard while you are sleeping, storing memories. If you aren’t getting enough sleep, start by going to be 30 minutes earlier and work you way up to 7-9 hours of sleep.
5| Drink More Water
Water is crucial to cleanse all the water and toxins from our bodies. Drinking enough water helps relieve fatigue. It promotes healthy skin and by drinking water instead of sodas or other sugary drinks, it can aid in weight loss. The benefits are endless. Grab a cute water bottle. We love these from Target. Having something you love might inspire you to track consumption and drink more water.
I briefly mentioned above about JHRewardsLife.com and how you can earn rewards by making healthy choices. One thing that is so neat about this program is that it rewards you for buying healthy foods at the grocery store. With John Hancock life insurance with Vitality and the new HealthyFood program, not only can you save up to $600 a year on the nutritious foods you buy, but you can also significantly save on your life insurance premium and earn valuable rewards and everyday savings for those healthy food purchases. Isn’t that cool!?
Check out JHRewardsLife.com to learn more about this program and other simple steps you can take for a healthier lifestyle. And of course, if you’re interested in attending a future John Hancock Hosts the Cooking Light & Health Fit Foodie Race Weekend, check out the upcoming dates here.
